T20 वर्ल्ड कप का आयोजन आम तौर पर हर दो साल में होता है. 2016 में भारत में हुए सफल आयोजन के बाद ICC ने साल 2018 में इसे साउथ अफ्रीका में कराने की घोषणा की थी. लेकिन 2017 के चैंपियंस ट्रॉफी के चलते ICC को 2018 में आयोजन के प्लान को ड्रॉप करना पड़ा. 2020 में भी कोरोना के चलते T20 वर्ल्ड कप का आयोजन नहीं हो सका. आखिरकार 5 साल के अंतराल पर साल 2021 में इसका आयोजन यूएई और ओमान में किया गया.
