To check your PAN-Aadhaar linking status in 2026, you can use the official Income Tax Department portal or SMS services.
1. Online via Income Tax Portal (No Login Required)
The fastest way to check is through the official Income Tax e-Filing Portal:
- Go to the homepage and locate the “Quick Links” section on the left.
- Click on Link Aadhaar Status.
- Enter your 10-digit PAN and 12-digit Aadhaar number.
- Click “View Link Aadhaar Status”. A message will appear immediately confirming if the two are linked.
2. Check via SMS PAN Aadhaar
If you do not have internet access, you can check the status by sending an SMS from your registered mobile number:
- Format:
UIDPAN <12-digit Aadhaar> <10-digit PAN>. - Send to: 567678 or 56161.
- You will receive a response stating whether the Aadhaar is already associated with the PAN in the ITD database.
3. Important Deadlines for 2026
- General Deadline: For most individuals, the mandatory deadline was June 30, 2023. If not linked, your PAN is likely already inoperative, meaning you cannot file returns or get refunds.
- Special Extension: Individuals who obtained their PAN using an Aadhaar Enrolment ID (before October 1, 2024) have until December 31, 2026, to complete the linkage for free.
- Reactivation: If your PAN is inoperative, you must pay a penalty of ₹1,000 through the e-Pay Tax service before you can submit a linking request. Reactivation can take 7 to 30 days after submission.
Exempt Categories PAN Aadhaar
You are not required to link PAN and Aadhaar if you are:
A resident of Assam, Meghalaya, or Jammu & Kashmir.
An NRI or not a citizen of India.
Aged 80 years or older.
